Doorbell Wiring Diagram Tutorial: Components

Doorbell Transformer

The doorbell transformer is what powers your doorbell. If you are planning on installing smart doorbell we recommend that you use this hardwired 16V-30VA transformer that we have tested and installed with smart doorbells. It has more power than typical 16V doorbells and is rated to provide the power that both Nest and Ring Doorbells need.

The doorbell transformer converts the higher 120V voltage that runs through your house wiring down a lower voltage between 16V-24V AC (Alternating Current).

Doorbell Chime

The Doorbell Chime is the mechanical or electrical part of the doorbell that is designed to make noise when the doorbell is pressed. For smart doorbells we typically recommend using mechanical doorbells because we've seen them have fewer problems working with smart doorbells than electronic chimes.

Doorbell Button

The Doorbell button is the button that is pushed to complete the doorbell circuit that then rings the doorbell chime. When you install a smart doorbell like the Ring Pro Doorbell or Ring 2 Doorbell you are replacing the Doorbell Button.

Doorbell Wiring Diagram

We've posted a still shot of the Doorbell Wiring diagram and thoroughly explain it in the video but what's important to note is that you must complete a circuit with the Doorbell Wiring.

Wiring Circuit:

You wire the doorbell transformer to the transformer terminal on the doorbell chime. Then from the front terminal on the doorbell chime to the front doorbell button. Then from the other free terminal on the doorbell button to the other free terminal on the doorbell transformer.
